ARTS COUNCIL ANNOUNCES GRANTS
FOR KUUMBA KIDS GRANTS

The Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester has received five grants totaling $17,100 in support of its Kuumba Kids program for urban youth. They are: Fred and Floy Willmott Foundation for $7,000; Ronald McDonald House Charities for $5,000; Chase Manhattan Foundation for $3,000; the Cornyn Foundation for $1,100 and M&T Bank for $1,000. The money will be used to support the Kuumba Kids program.

Kuumba Kids is a structured after-school and summer arts program with a track record of benefiting urban youth and their families. Through involvement with the Kuumba Kids program, youth develop life skills such as cooperation and time organization. They also experience new forms of learning through a variety of art forms that enhance skills such as reading, clarity of speech, and poise.

The Kuumba Kids program serves at-risk African-American boys and girls, ages 7 to 15, by teaching them dance and theater based in African-American culture. Kuumba Kids is a collaboration with the South West Neighborhood Association, artists and the Arts Council. The lead artists are Delores Jackson Radney and Clyde Morgan
