Arts Council Announces Volunteers of the Year
Rochester, NY-- The Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester announces with pleasure that Professors Gordon Goodman and Stephen Jacobs of Rochester Institute of Technology are the recipients of the Arts Council's 1998 Volunteers of the Year Award.
Goodman and Jacobs are honored for their long-term volunteer service in initiating and supporting the Arts Council s innovative web site, www.carol.org. CAROL is Culture and Arts for Rochester On Line. It features easy access to all the web sites of Rochester s cultural organizations, as well as a directory of local artists and an interactive cultural calendar.
Since 1994, Goodman and Jacobs have directed teams of students in RIT s Department of Information Technology who have developed 12 web sites for local cultural organizations, including the George Eastman House, Young Audiences, Writers & Books, and BOA Editions. All the sites can be accessed through one entry point.
The CAROL site serves as a model for other communities wishing to develop collaborative web sites for arts and culture. Goodman and Jacobs have presented information about CAROL at several national conferences.
Goodman and Jacobs continue to be active participants in the development of CAROL. They are also committed to the training and education of local cultural workers. Recently, they led a workshop for staff and volunteers of local arts organizations titled "Stop worrying and love the Internet."
