$3,920 Awarded to Seven Artists
from the New York State Foundation for the Arts
through the
Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester

ROCHESTER—The Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester, in partnership with the New York Foundation for the Arts, has awarded Strategic Opportunity Stipends totaling $3,920 to seven artists from throughout the region for work occurring between November 2006 and February 2007 that will significantly enhance their careers. Stipends, which ranged from $360 to $600, were awarded as follows:

  • Darlynne A. Stefanko of Trumansburg was awarded $600 for her first visual arts exhibition, at the Clinton House Artspace Gallery in Ithaca.
  • Joan Lyons of Rochester was awarded $600 to offset the cost of matting and framing her work for a retrospective at the Rochester Contemporary. The retrospective will look back over 30 years of Lyons’s career. Lyons recently retired as director of the Visual Studies Workshop Press, which she founded.
  • Sarah Burton of Rochester was awarded $560 to complete metal sculptures for exhibition in her first art show, at Artisan Works.
  • Sally Bittner Bonn of Rochester was awarded $360 for a poetry mentorship with Thom Ward, a poet and the editor of BOA Editions, Ltd..
  • Pia Liptak, violinist, was awarded $600 for travel to Hawaii to perform with her collaborator, Ryuko Mizutani, Japanese koto player, at the University of Hawaii. The performances will include new works by Rochester composers as well as new works by Hawaiian composers.
  • Niema Atkins of Rochester, director of Ba Bes Dance, was awarded $600 to offset childcare costs while she works to choreograph a ballet inspired by two Jamaican-born artists. The work will be performed at the Baobab Cultural Center during Kwanzaa.
  • Tom Willard of Rochester was awarded $600 to offset the cost of mounting a solo photographic exhibition titled “The Wondering Years: A Photographic Journey Into Deafness,” at Miami-Dade College in Miami, Florida. The exhibition chronicles Willard’s transition from a youth with normal hearing to a young man who is deaf.

Strategic Opportunity Stipends, available to artists of all disciplines, are awarded three times per year. Artists from the following counties may apply: Cayuga, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates.

Applications for the next round, for opportunities from March through June 2007, are due February 1, 2007.
