Eight Artists Receive $4,200 in New York State Foundation for the Arts Funding through Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester

ROCHESTER—The Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester, in partnership with the New York Foundation for the Arts awarded eight artists from throughout the region a total of $4,200 in Strategic Opportunity Stipends for work occurring between November 2005 and February 2006 that will significantly enhance their careers. Stipends, which ranged from $320 to $600, were awarded to the following artists:

  • James V. Allen of Rochester, Monroe County, to have 10 photographs of jazz musicians in performance printed on fiber-based paper for submission, by invitation, to be included in the George Eastman House archives;
  • Edwin (Ted) Canning of Piffard, Livingston County, to travel to Trinidad in February, 2006, where he has been invited to perform with the Highlanders Steel Orchestra in the Trinidad & Tobago National Panorama Steel Band Competition;
  • Christian Carson of Brockport, Monroe County, for a solo exhibition of his paintings, drawings, collages, and animation at the Teaching Gallery, Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York, where he will also give an artist talk;
  • Clifford “Shabaka” Collier of Rochester, Monroe County, to attend a screenwriting conference in Los Angeles;
  • Heather Layton of Rochester, Monroe County, for costs associated with installation of a one-month solo exhibition titled “When the Gods Prayed Back” at the ARC Gallery in Chicago in December;
  • Scott McCarney of Rochester, Monroe County, to present his work at the Third Australian Artists’ Books Forum in Mackay, Queensland and to create new work with at Studio West End in Brisbane, where he will work with Adele Outteridge and Wim de Vos, two nationally recognized Australian book artists;
  • Jim Morris of Batavia, Genesee County, to participate in a curated, six-person painting exhibition at the Urban Institute of Contemporary Art in Grand Rapids, Michigan in December, 2005 through March 2006, where he will exhibit 20 small paintings;
  • Elizabeth Switzer of Sodus, Wayne County, for materials used in creating her first post-graduate solo exhibition titled “Dirty Little Pillows,” at the Burchfield-Penny Art Center in Buffalo, NY in January, 2006.

Strategic Opportunity Stipends, available to artists of all disciplines, are awarded three times per year. Artists from the following counties may apply: Cayuga, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates.

Applications for the next round, for opportunities in March through June 2006, are due February 1, 2006.
