Nine Artists Receive $4,000 in New York State Foundation for the Arts Funding Through Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester


ROCHESTER—The New York Foundation for the Arts, in partnership with The Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester has awarded nine artists from around the region a total of $4,000 in Special Opportunity Stipends for work occurring between February and June, 2005 that will significantly enhance their careers. Stipends, which ranged from $250 to $600, were awarded to the following artists:

Roberley Bell, Genesee County, for a sculpture exhibition at the Main Line Art Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania;

Ned Bobkoff , Monroe County, to purchase the rights to the novel Ali and Nino, in order to direct the stage adaptation in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, where the novel is set.

Robin Cass, Monroe County, to serve as a visiting artist at the Tacoma Museum of Glass and Center for Contemporary Art in Tacoma, Washington;

Reenah Golden , Monroe County, to travel to Antigua for a performance in the 2005 Antigua Cultural Exchange program;

Susan Hoak, Genesee County, for her first solo exhibition, at the PIECES Gallery in Batavia.? Karen Thomas-Lillie, Cayuga County, for her first gallery exhibit, at the Delavan Art Gallery in Syracuse, NY;

Jim Morris, Genesee County, to offset the cost of preparing and completing 100 of his small drawings for the “Beyond/In New York” exhibition at the Burchfield-Penny Art Center at Buffalo State College;

Meg Ruby, Monroe County, to travel to Cuenca, Ecuador to present a series of solo piano recital as Guest Artist at the Universidad de Cuenca;

Benjamin Williams, Monroe County, to complete a two-dimensional animated documentary that will be aired locally.

Special Opportunity Stipends are awarded three times per year. Artists from the following counties may apply: Cayuga, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne and Wyoming and Yates.

Applications for the next SOS round are due May 24, 2005. Information sessions at the Arts & Cultural Council offices, 277 N. Goodman Street, are scheduled for Tuesday, April 12 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and on Tuesday, April 19 from noon until 1 p.m. Attendance at these sessions, while not required, is strongly recommended.
