Arts & Cultural Council Awards more than $70,000 in Culture Builds Communities Grants
ROCHESTER , NY , March 10, 2006--The Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester today announced awards totaling $70,163 in 2006 Culture Builds Communities (CBC) grants to six neighborhood-based non-profit organizations for community art projects in neighborhoods throughout the city.
CBC is a program of the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester in partnership with the City of Rochester and Citibank. Its goal is to strengthen neighborhood pride through participatory projects that involve neighborhood nonprofit organizations, residents, and artists in the creation of a lasting work of community art.
The organizations awarded grants are:

Northeast Area Development, Inc., Sector 8 , $8,492 to create lamp post mosaics, build flower boxes, and create floor mosaics at 90 Webster Avenue, site of the Museum of Kids Art. The project artists are Neil Barnam and Kevin Dean;

Rochester Contemporary/Village Gate Merchants Association, Sector7, $8,492 to paint a mural on the north side of Village Gate, 320 N. Goodman Street, replacing an existing mural. The project artist is Mark Bierworth;

Rochester Downtown Development Corp., Sector 5 , $15,492 to fund the first project of the proposed Rochester Outdoor Museum of Art (ROMA), a photographic mosaic of 10,000 individual photographs on the blank north wall of the SUNY Brockport MetroCenter at 55 Saint Paul Street. The project managers are Kenichiro Sato and John Lam;

South Wedge Planning Committee/Swillburg Neighborhood Association, Sector 6, $16,492 for creation and installation of five metal-framed murals with arches on the Pembroke Street side of the concrete wall along I-490. The project artist is Maria Friske.

Upper Mount Hope Neighbors, Sector 7 , $15,492 for the design, creation, and installation of steel silhouettes on light poles throughout the Upper Mount Hope neighborhood. The designs will be created by children from Mary Cariola Children’s Center around the theme of “hope” and “encouragement”. The project artist, Achille Forgione, will oversee final creation of the silhouettes.

Wilson Commencement Park, Sector 10 , $5,700 for “Future Walk,” a mural and walkway on the facility’s grounds on Joseph Avenue designed by Early Learning Center students and visible to the broader neighborhood. The project artist is Sylvester Anderson.
