$4,000 Awarded to Nine Artists
Through Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester

ROCHESTER—The Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester, in partnership with the New York Foundation for the Arts, awarded nine artists from across the region a total of $4,000 in Strategic Opportunity Stipends for work occurring between March and June of this year that will significantly enhance their careers. A total of nearly $11,000 in requests from 18 artists was received for this highly competitive grant program. Stipends, which ranged from $300 to $600, were awarded to the following artists:

  • Elizabeth Agte, jewelry artist, of Rochester, to participate in an exhibition in conjunction with the Society of North American Goldsmiths conference in Memphis;
  • Nils Caspersson, folk artist, of Holley, to travel to Sweden to research the origins of the fretted dulcimer in order to refine his craft of dulcimer making and to devise a lecture and interactive performance program related to the origins of the dulcimer;
  • Maryann Connolly, photographer, of East Rochester, for costs related to mounting her first solo exhibition, at Canaltown Coffee Roasters in Pittsford;
  • Pamela Davis of Rochester, for a multidisciplinary program of poetry, visual art, and dance at the Gallery at High Falls;
  • Kelly Jacobson, electronic arts, of Rochester, to travel to Beijing to install her work as part of the Institute for Electronic Arts 10 th anniversary exhibition;
  • Esther S. Miller, painter, of Weedsport, for a solo exhibition of her work at the Auburn Chamber of Commerce;
  • Jane Notides-Benzing, visual artist, of Rochester, for a solo mixed media installation of her work at the Lab Space of the Rochester Contemporary;
  • Darren Stevenson, choreographer, of Rochester, for a one-week mentorship with Bill Wade, director of Inlet Dance Theatre;
  • Wendy Smith, media artist, of Rochester, for a mentorship to instruct her in creating work on DVD.

Strategic Opportunity Stipends, available to artists of all disciplines, are awarded three times per year. Artists from the following 10 counties may apply to the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester: Cayuga, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates.

Applications for the next SOS round, for opportunities from July 2007 through October 2007, are due at the Arts & Cultural Council by 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2007.
