Eight Artists Receive $3,913 in Funding
Through Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester
ROCHESTER—The Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester, in partnership with the New York Foundation for the Arts, awarded eight artists from throughout the region a total of $3,913 in Strategic Opportunity Stipends for work occurring between March and June 2006 that will significantly enhance their careers. Stipends, which ranged from $178 to $600, were awarded to the following artists:
- Larry Merrill of Rochester, visual arts, $600 for a solo exhibition at the ARTECO Institute in Cumberland, Maryland. The exhibition will feature Merrill’s photographs of artisans of Bhutan at work on traditional Buddhist arts and crafts;
- Zoje Stage of Rochester, film/media, $178 for travel expenses to attend the screening of her films “Bewilderness” and “Best of Luck” at the NewFilmmakers Winter 2006 Series in New York City;
- John Kastner of Rochester, visual arts, $550 to attend the opening of the Society of Illustrators’ West 44 invitational exhibition at the Billy Shire Fine Arts Gallery in Los Angeles. Kastner’s work titled “Man at Table” will be included in the exhibition.
- Cathleen Burnham of Pittsford, literature, $600 to attend a selective non-fiction writing workshop through the Highlights Foundation in Honesdale, Pennsylvania.
- Jolene Beckman of Batavia, visual arts, $240 for travel and promotional costs associated with a solo show at the Vagabond Gallery in Canandaigua;
- Kathleen Falvo of Rochester, visual arts, $478 to work with mentor artist Minhhang Huynh of Geneseo, New York to learn the art of egg tempera painting on wood in the creation of religious icons;
- Emily Watson of Honeoye Falls, crafts, $598 to complete silver and enamel artwork and jewelry in order to participate in a two-person exhibition at the Cedar Arts Center in Corning, New York;
- Laurie Thurston of Rochester, literature, $569 to attend a four-day, selective workshop on writing young adult novels through the Highlights Foundation Founders Workshop Program in Honesdale, Pennsylvania.
Strategic Opportunity Stipends, available to artists of all disciplines, are awarded three times per year. Artists from the following 10 counties may apply to the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester: Cayuga, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates.
Applications for the next SOS round, for opportunities from July through October 2006, are due at the Arts & Cultural Council by 5 p.m. on May 24, 2006.
