Morelle and Alesi Secure Funds for Rochester Arts Agency

Assemblyman Joseph D. Morelle (D-Irondequoit), Chair of the Assembly Arts Committee, and Senator James Alesi (R-East Rochester) have secured a $100,000 state grant for The Arts and Cultural Council of Greater Rochester. The funding will be used to establish a community art gallery and to move to a new location in 2003.

“The arts are an essential component of our region’s economic success and it is the Arts and Cultural Council that provides the necessary leadership and activism for this important community,” Assemblyman Morelle said. “This state grant will assist their efforts to expand and enhance Rochester’s image as a regional arts and cultural center.”

“As a longtime supporter of the arts, I am pleased to join Assemblyman Morelle in announcing these grants,” Senator Alesi added. “The Arts and Cultural Council has been a valuable asset to the Greater Rochester area by providing a wide variety of services for purposes ranging from education to entertainment. The new art gallery will be a welcome addition to a rich and diverse arts community already thriving at the heart of life in Rochester.”

The press conference was held in the new office space on North Goodman Street that the Council will begin to occupy next year. Representatives of the Arts Council and member organizations joined Assemblyman Morelle and Senator Alesi for the announcement.

“This funding by Assemblyman Morelle and Senator Alesi will enable the Arts Council to establish a community art gallery for our member artists and allow us to better serve our membership and the community,” added Sarah Lentini, Executive Director of The Arts and Cultural Council of Greater Rochester. “I want to thank Senator Alesi and Assemblyman Morelle for their hard work on behalf of Rochester’s arts and cultural community.”

The Arts and Cultural Council is an umbrella agency and membership association serving as a funder, planner and advocate for the arts and cultural community in the 10-county region.
