Summer ArtWorks Final Celebration & Performances
Rochester, NY August 15, 2002 - Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester's summer jobs program is pleased to announce the annual Art Exhibition, Sale and Performances on Thursday, August 22nd, 2002 at Dr. Freddie Thomas Learning Center, 625 Scio Street, Rochester. See the work produced by our 40 Apprentice Artists! These 14 and 15 year olds from the City of Rochester gained valuable work experience and learned new artistic skills.
Roc City Editions is a publishing house started by twenty students in the Poetry and Language Arts program, working with teaching artist Todd Beers to learn the craft, language, interpretation and editing of poetry. As a company they will release "Around Our Way", a collection of poetry. The event will also include a performance of the poets' work and a book signing session.
The Visual Arts Project is a mixed media apprenticeship to memorialize the life and work of Frederick Douglass. Apprentice artists built basic art skills while researching the history of slavery and the life of Frederick Douglass. Projects include commemorative ceramic totem poles, an embroidered quilt with images of Douglass, and a 5' x 6' oil on canvas portrait. Apprentice artists have also created a design that could be a permanent memorial on the site of Douglass' house at Highland Park.
