April 4, 2002, Rochester NY- The New York Alliance for Arts Education and the New York State Council on the Arts with collaborating partner, the Association for Teaching Artists, will present the statewide conference, Arts and Education: A Common Ground for Learning. Join us for an inspiring two and a half days of workshops, panel and roundtable discussions, keynote speakers, and art making venues held in the heart of Rochester's cultural arts district. The conference is reconvening after a two-year absence and will be held at the Strathallan Hotel in Rochester, NY, Thursday through Saturday, April 25 through 27, 2002.

The conference is geared to a varied arts education constituency composed of arts administrators, arts educators, classroom teachers, community based organization representatives, cultural and arts in education organization staff, independent artists, parents, school administrators and school board members, and social service agency staff. Drawing on the wealth of experienced professionals in New York State and nationally recognized experts, the conference will explore a range of topics. Among the primary themes are providing ways to improve practices, acknowledging the good work already accomplished and strategizing for future success. The conference will explore and provide effective ways to secure funding and address funding issues, tell our stories to advocate for increased support, learn from our colleagues' successes, and reaffirm our vision for children.

The conference will feature a keynote address by renowned arts educator, director, producer, and playwright, Arnold Aprill, Executive Director of the Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education (CAPE). At press time, the wide-range of planned topics include: Funding Opportunities from the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S. Department of Education; Grantwriting; Program Documentation, Evaluation, and Research; Reflective Practice; Dynamics of Team Teaching; Special Populations and Alternative Education Settings; The History & Future of Arts Education; Management Skills for Teaching Artists; and Learning Standards and Multiple Intelligences.
