Arts & Cultural Council Awards Community Arts Grants For 2002: 56 Grants Total $114,267
March 7, 2002 Rochester, NY- The Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester and Rochester Area Community Foundation today announced the 2002 Community Arts Grants. Grants totaling $114,267 were made to 56 nonprofit organizations and artists from Monroe and surrounding counties. Community Arts Grants are funded by the New York State Legislature through the New York State Council on the Arts, and by Rochester Area Community Foundation.
"We are once again very grateful to the State Legislature, and to the Rochester Area Community Foundation, for making these awards possible", said Arts Council Executive Director Sarah E. Lentini. "This funding is essential to the existence of the vibrant arts communities in the Greater Rochester/Finger Lakes area."
The awards are being given in three categories this year: 1) New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization grants ($78,265); 2) the Rochester Area Community Foundation - Community Arts Fund ($26,002); and 3) new this year, New York State Council on the Arts Local Capacity Building Initiative - Artists Residencies in the Schools Program ($10,000).
The grants are extremely competitive. Three panels of peer reviewers evaluated 110 applications. Each project is evaluated on artistic merit, audience served, quality and feasibility of proposed project.
The 2002 Community Arts Grants were awarded in three general categories:
NEW YORK STATE COUNCIL ON THE ARTS DECENTRALIZATION FUND Project Support $78,265 in funding recommended to 40 applicants out of 61. For nonprofit organizations and individual artists in Monroe County to offer arts related projects or programs in all disciplines that serve Monroe County residents.
NEW YORK STATE COUNCIL ON THE ARTS LOCAL CAPACITY BUILDING INITIATIVE- ARTISTS RESIDENCIES IN THE SCHOOLS - 8 matching grants totaling $10,000 in funding for schools and community groups to offer performing and visual artist residencies integrated into arts or core curriculum, using community resources for schools or teachers with limited access to arts programming.
ROCHESTER AREA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION-COMMUNITY ARTS FUND $26,002 in funding recommended to 8 groups out of 24 applicants. Funding for capacity-building projects for arts organizations with budgets under $300,000 in Monroe, Wayne, Ontario, Livingston, Genesee, or Orleans County. This fund also includes the Esther Usdane Memorial Fund that provided $2,600 to support community theater this year.

ROCHESTER AREA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION COMMUNITY ARTS FUND: Susan Robertson, Panel Chair, Director of Development & PR, Eastman School of Music; Nan Hildebrandt, Director of Development, Geva Theater; Robert Laird, Deputy Director for Community Services, Action for a Better Community, Susan Chekow Lusignan, Co-producer, Rochester Arts & Lectures; John Murphy, Chief Executive Officer, Sonnenberg Mansion and Gardens.
Community Arts Grants are funded by the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester, New York State Legislature, the New York State Council on the Arts, and Rochester Area Community Foundation, and administered by the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester.
