State Extends Deadline for Public Arts Competition
In Conjunction with its Western Gateway 490 Reconstruction Project

(Rochester, NY-- December 3, 2001) The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is pleased to announce the deadline for submitting proposals has been extended until December 21, 2001. Individuals who reside in the Western New York area (Syracuse and west) are encouraged to submit designs for two separate competitions. The winning art design will be incorporated into the I-490 Western Gateway reconstruction project, slated to begin next year.

Proposals are now due by 5:00 p.m. on December 21, 2001.

The first competition will choose a design or designs and install enhancements to noise barrier panels (focus panels) at three locations adjacent to Interstate I-490. The second competition will choose a design or designs and install enhancements to bridge pylons at the Ames, Child and Saxton Street bridges over I-490.

"The visual characteristics of this corridor can shape and leave a lasting impression upon those who live, work and commute on and adjacent to the western gateway," Regional Director Charles E. Moynihan said. "We are pleased to offer the opportunity to incorporate artwork into a State transportation project."
