Top Half of South Wedge Kiosk Installed

Rochester, NY, June 14 2001- Those wondering what has been going on with the South Wedge Kiosk will have their answer on Friday, June 15!

The brick base of the kiosk at South Avenue and Gregory Street was completed last fall. Throughout the winter and spring, Edison Tech High School students constructed the top half of the structure in the school's metal shop. The top half includes two standing seam copper roofs.

On Friday, workers from CP Ward will place the top half on a boom truck, transport it to the South Wedge and erect it on top of the brick base using a crane. They will arrive at South Avenue and Gregory Street at approximately 10 a.m.

The South Wedge Planning Committee expects to complete the remaining details on the kiosk this summer. On the top half of the kiosk, SWPC will install a clock and three metal sculptures. The metal sculptures will be based on themes in the South Wedge Revitalization Plan.

SWPC will also install three information panels on the bottom half of the kiosk. The panels will include a map of the South Wedge, a neighborhood history, and information on local events.

Special thanks go to Tom Waydellis, metal shop teacher at Edison Tech, for his commitment to making the kiosk a success. Thanks also go to Gary Wasman of AAA Machine and Welding and Postler & Jaeckle for their time, materials and expertise.

Architect Dave Waldarek of Martin Rose Associates and SWPC Board member John Dennis have volunteered countless hours to coordinate the kiosk project. The kiosk would not have been possible without their commitment. Funding for the kiosk is coming through the City of Rochester Dept. of Economic Development (South Avenue Commercial Enhancement District) and the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester.
