ARTWalk Dances on the Avenue Seeks Performances

Rochester, NY - ARTWalk, in cooperation with the South East Area Coalition (SEAC), is seeking dance performance entries for its ribbon-cutting celebration on October 14, 2001. ARTWalk¹s Dances on the Avenue competition is open to all residents of the six-county Greater Rochester Area. Individual dancers, dance companies, performance groups, and students are all invited to enter. Eight performances will take place at different sites on University Avenue as part of festivities commemorating the launch of ARTWalk.

"We want to provide the audience with a variety of dancing experiences," says Dr. Danielle Fraenkel, ARTWalk board member and director of Kinections, a Rochester-based dance and movement therapy center. "Between each performance, the dancing docents will invite the audience to learn a step and dance along from stage to stage."

Dr. Fraenkel and Thomas Warfield, a choreographer, dancer, singer and teacher, are coordinating the competition. A group of independent jurors will review submitted videotapes, which must be received by Friday, July 27. Application and guidelines are available upon request via e-mail at artwalk@rochester.rr.com or by calling (716)234-6670. The application can also be downloaded from www.rochesterartwalk.org.

The October event will also feature music, art displays, prizes and activities for kids and families. "ARTWalk parties are extremely popular with people of all ages from all over the Rochester area," says Doug Rice, executive director of ARTWalk. "But this will be the biggest one so far. It marks the pouring of the sidewalk that will literally set the foundation of Rochester¹s first interactive urban outdoor museum."

ARTWalk runs along University Avenue between the Memorial Art Gallery and the George Eastman House. The museum will connect cultural centers and other destinations in the Neighborhood of the Arts. As pedestrians stroll the wide, decorative sidewalk, they will see sculpture as well as everyday objects crafted by artists, such as benches, light posts and bus stops. ARTWalk also holds events and programs to encourage the community to enjoy and participate in the arts.
