News Arts & Cultural Council commissions Artist Cheryl Louise Olney
to create Awards
Artist Cheryl Louise Olney has been commissioned by the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester to create a plaque for each recipient of the 17th Annual Arts Awards. Awards will be given to individuals and organizations who have made outstanding contributions to arts and culture in the Greater Rochester region. The commissioned pieces will be unveiled, and presented to the Awards Recipients, at the Annual Arts Awards Luncheon on October 12, 2000.
Olney, who lives and works in Rochester, specializes in figurative and abstract collages made of wood. The collages for the Arts Awards Commission will feature a community of colorful three-dimensional figures celebrating the arts.
Sarah Lentini, Arts & Cultural Council executive director, said, "Cheryl Olney was selected to make the plaques because of the joyous nature of her work. Her proposal caught the spirit of celebration we feel the arts bring to our region."
2000 is the third year that the Arts & Cultural Council has commissioned artists to create awards for Arts Awards recipients. The commission focuses attention on the range and quality of individual artists in the region. In 1998, the Awards were made by fabric artist Mary Ann Scarborough. Metalsmith Tom Markusen was commissioned to make the awards for 1999.
