Education through the Arts Grants Announced

Four grants, totaling $8,000, have been awarded through the Education through the Arts grant program:

School of the Arts and artist Reenah Golden-Collier for SOTA Slam!, a project for 9 th & 12 th graders using youth popular culture to explore poetry, literature and performance.

School #23 and artists Elizabeth Clark and Leah Ruekberg forThe Tree of Peace, a project for 4 th & 5 th graders using storytelling, music, visual symbols and dance/movement to learn about Native American history and conflict resolution.

School #46 and artist Annette Ramos for Modern Lessons of Juan Bobo, a project for 1 st & 2 nd graders using music, dance, and Puerto Rican folktales to learn about history, literature, and languages other than English.

Craig Hill School (Greece) and PUSH Physical Theatre for Diversity, Folktales & Physical Theatre, a project for 3 rd graders to create "human pop-up books" from the text-based folktales of other countries.

The Education through the Arts grant program provides matching funds to partnerships involving at least one classroom teacher and one teaching artist for projects using both arts and non-arts subjects. Funding decisions are made by a volunteer peer review panel made up of local educators, artists, and administrators.

The Arts & Cultural Council has re-granted nearly $48,000 in Education through the Arts fundssince the program's inception in 2001.
