Economic Impact Study--2006-2007

Americans for the Arts Enlists 120 Communities Around the Country in its Nationwide Study

The Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester has been selected to partner with Americans for the Arts for an economic impact study of cultural organizations and venues in Monroe County. This initiative, Arts & Economic Prosperity III: The Economic Impact of Nonprofit Arts Organizations and their Audiences in Rochester, N.Y., is the first of its kind in this region. The effort is part of a national project undertaken by Americans for the Arts which will assess the overall impact of the cultural sector on the national economy while looking at 120 communities in detail, including Rochester. Americans for the Arts' economic impact studies continue to be among the most frequently cited statistics used to demonstrate the impact of the nation’s nonprofit arts industry on the local, state, and national economy.

The study commenced in April with completion scheduled for summer 2007. Cultural organizations in the area have been asked to complete a confidential online survey. Additionally, approximately 800 audience surveys will be conducted with patrons at a broad range of cultural events.

Highlights of the study will include the following:

  • Economic Impact of the total nonprofit arts industry
  • Economic Impact of spending by arts organizations AND arts audiences
  • Visitor spending
  • Arts volunteerism and impact beyond dollars

The results of the study will be made available to all cultural organizations and venues in the area, as well as community leaders and interested citizens.

Financial support for the study is provided by the Arts & Cultural Council and the Joan & Harold Feinbloom Supporting Foundation of the Rochester Area Community Foundation.
