The Arts & Cultural Council makes competitive grants to nonprofit organizations and artists in a number of different programs and categories.
Many grants require that you provide the name and/or district number of your state senator and assembly member. Click here for help on finding that information.

Please note: Grant programs are offered contingent upon the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester’s receipt of funding. The Arts & Cultural Council reserves the right to cancel the grant programs at any time.

Community Arts Grants
For public programs taking place the following calendar year. Grants of up to $5,000 are available for nonprofits. Monroe County nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply for Decentralization Grants, which are funded by the New York State Legislature and the New York State Council on the Arts in partnership with the Arts & Cultural Council. Arts organizations with budgets under $600,000 and based in Monroe, Wayne, Ontario, Livingston, Genesee and Orleans Counties may apply for Capacity Building Grants, which are administered by the Arts & Cultural Council and funded in partnership with Rochester Area Community Foundation. Grants for the two programs totaled approximately $100,000 for 2009.
The Arts & Cultural Council will also be awarding three (3) grants of $2,300 each for Individual Artist Projects. These grants are part of the Decentralization program and are funded in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York State Legislature.
The deadline for 2010 Community Arts Grants has passed. Please check back in August 2010 for a schedule of Grant Information Sessions and the application deadline for 2011 grants.

“Education through the Arts” grant program
The program is designed to encourage artists, teachers, administrators, and parents to collaborate on well-planned partnership programs that involve interdisciplinary art programs in a curriculum. Matching grants up to $5,000 will be made to interested schools and cultural groups.
Application seminars for the next round of grants will be held at the Arts & Cultural Council on:
Monday, October 5, 2009 at 12:30 PM
Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 4 PM
Application seminars OR one-on-one meetings with Arts Council grants staff are mandatory for first-time applicants.
All applicants are required to notify the Arts & Cultural Council of their intent to apply prior to submitting a proposal. Submission of a draft for Arts & Cultural Council staff review is encouraged.
THE NEXT DEADLINE IS THURSDAY NOVEMBER 11, 2009 AT 5 PM.

Strategic Opportunity Stipends (SOS)
Strategic Opportunity Stipends (SOS), a project of the New York Foundation for the Arts working in collaboration with the arts councils and cultural institutions across New York State, is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
SOS grants are designed to help individual artists of all disciplines take advantage of unique opportunities that may significantly benefit their work or career development. Visual, literary, media and performing artists may request support ranging from $100 to $600 for specific forthcoming opportunities.

The application is a fillable PDF form. Responses should be typed in the space provided. Should you require assistance, please contact Jennifer Watson, Grants Manager.
When you submit your 7 copies, please be sure to include the cover page (with responses to the three narrative questions), your budget, and the required supplemental materials. All packets must be collated.

Fiber Arts Program
The Fiber Arts Program, a partnership with the Genesee Valley Quilt Club, provides financial assistance to individuals for projects that advance and promote the fiber arts. Grants of up to $500 are available for projects that further the craft and engage the community, with activities taking place in 2010. Eligible activities include creation of new work, as well as teaching and/or documenting the fiber arts. Projects may involve any fiber art, with priority consideration for quilting.
This grant program exists to support professional fees for the artist, along with the cost of materials and supplies.
Artists in Cayuga, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming, and Yates Counties, are eligible to apply for a maximum of $500 to support projects to be completed in 2010.
Applications must be received - not postmarked - by 5PM on Friday, December 4, 2009.
