CANANDAIGUA – Photo buffs and shutterbugs, expert and amateur alike, will have until Mon. Sept. 6 to mail-in or hand-deliver their favorite photos and images of the landscapes, architecture or people at Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park in Canandaigua for the 2010 Photo Contest & Exhibit.

Three major categories of images – Landscape, Architecture and People – will be featured in a juried Fall Photo Exhibit at Sonnenberg’s 1887 Mansion, open daily to visitors touring this 50-acre historic estate. The exhibit will celebrate Sonnenberg, past and present, and will be on display in the first-floor of the Mansion, which is handicap-accessible, from Sept. 18 – approximately Oct. 21. Announcement of the jury winners (12 prizes across 3 categories) will take place Oct. 15. Visitors to the Mansion this fall will be able to vote on their favorites in each of the three categories in a People’s Choice division of the contest. Daily Hours for the estate after Labor Day are 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

A portion of the exhibit will include historic black and white photos from Sonnenberg’s own Frederick Ferris Thompson, who owned the estate with his wife, Mary Clark Thompson. Mr. Thompson was an avid photographer himself, taking many photos, originally developed on glass plates and preserved in the Sonnenberg archives. Many of his images were taken during the couple’s travels throughout the U.S. He even submitted articles about American photography to the Photographic News of London. Mr. Thompson died in 1899, and within the following 20 years, his widow set about establishing the formal, themed gardens of the estate.

Rules for the Contest are as follows:

1. Photos must have been taken at the historic 50-acre property of Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park in Canandaigua.

2. There will be three categories: Landscape, People and Architecture. Entrants are permitted to enter one image per category. Each photo must be the property of the entrant and may not have been published elsewhere.

3. Submissions are to be PRINTS, of up to 8 x 10 inches, mounted and suitable for display. The contest entrant is responsible for obtaining any & all necessary model releases and/or disclaimers for the photos he or she submits. Sonnenberg Gardens reserves the right to publish any entry, both online and/or in print, for promotional purposes.

First-, second- and third-place winners in each of the three categories – Landscape, People, Architecture - will be selected by jury. Additionally, one prize in each category will be selected by popular vote in the People's Choice division of the contest. Decisions of the Jury Committee are final and the jury reserves the right to refuse a submitted photograph for inappropriate content.

Winning photographs will be placed in the Sonnenberg Calendar, with an overall Grand Prize Winner to be featured in the Winter 2010 Issue of Life in the Finger Lakes Magazine, which features the magazine’s own annual photo contest. Sonnenberg thanks Life in the Finger Lakes Magazine for supporting Sonnenberg’s special exhibit. Sonnenberg is sponsoring some of the prizes for the magazine’s annual photo contest this year.

Official entry forms are available online at www.sonnenberg.org and can be printed out and returned with your submission(s).

Mail-in entries must be sent to Photo Contest: Sonnenberg Gardens, 151 Charlotte Street, Canandaigua, NY 14424 and should be postmarked by Labor Day, Mon. Sept. 6.

Mounted prints may also be dropped off in person at Sonnenberg’s main offices at the Gardener’s Cottage reception desk, during business hours, 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. M – F. The Sonnenberg office WILL be OPEN on Labor Day, Sept. 6.

Entrants who want to have photos returned to them following the exhibit must provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope/mailer suitable for returning the mounted prints, following the conclusion of the contest.

Bridges to Wellness Traffic Control Box Project

REQUEST FOR PUBLIC ART PROJECT

Bridges to Wellness
Traffic Control Box Project

Postmark deadline for application is September 10, 2010.

The Bridges to Wellness (BTW) Neighborhood Health Improvement Project, in conjunction with the City of Rochester seek to commission completed art work on nine metal traffic control boxes in an area bounded by Avenue D (North), Nash Street (South), Portland Avenue (East), Hudson Avenue (West).

The primary objective of this project is to create community pride and identity among residents in a targeted area of Rochester’s northeast neighborhoods. As decided by BTW resident participants living in this area, the themes for this project are respectively children, positive affirmations, nature/ flowers, community leaders, and sports figures. All sketches and proposals should adhere to the above stated theme(s).

BACKGROUND
The traffic control boxes throughout the city have recently been targeted as functional canvasses for public art. We have watched other city neighborhoods beautify their urban streetscapes in this manner over the past several years and we have applauded their efforts; they have found a clever and beautiful way to combat graffiti vandalism on these frequently tagged surfaces. Therefore we recognize that this is not an original idea, this painting of control boxes. While we knew we wanted to paint the boxes in our neighborhood, we also wanted to find a way to do it that would set our neighborhood apart.

BTW seeks to commission art that reflects resident selected themes and artists who embrace art as a means of community pride and engagement.

DESIGN
The design of each piece will be left to the artist, but artistic sketches adhering to the named theme must be submitted. The project review committee will consider the fact that children and adults from many cultures and sectarian backgrounds will see and interface with this art.

The location of the 9 traffic control box eligible for painting are as follows:
1) Hudson Avenue and Upper Falls Blvd 2) North Street & Avenue D
3) Hudson Ave and Clifford Avenue 4) Portland Avenue and Draper Street
5) Hudson Avenue and Avenue D 6) Portland Avenue and Clifford Avenue
7) North Street and Cleveland Street 8) Portland Avenue and Lux Street
9) North Street and Clifford Avenue

Artists may submit sketches for specifically named traffic boxes taking into account the surrounding environment. The review committee will take this request into consideration however final traffic box assignment will be made available to the artist upon final selection. Please take into account both natural lighting of the daytime hours and artificial lighting during the night hours when selecting colors and designs. Deterioration over time may be expected and if possible the artist may be contacted to make repairs to their work at a fee schedule that will be agreed upon at a later date.

The scope of the project does not yet define the number of artists that will be involved with this project. However, artists are encouraged to provide sketches for any 1- 9 of the traffic control boxes.

INSTALLATION/COMPLETION OF WORK
All traffic control boxes will be cleaned and primed and ready to paint when the artists is able to commence work. Work on the boxes is to be completed between September 25 and October 24, 2010. All work must be completed in full by October 24, 2010. A public unveiling will be held on October 30, 2010. Upon completion, the control box should be clear coated with an appropriate poly-urethane to preserve the work; this material will be supplied by BTW however it shall be completed by the artist to ensure no damage occurs to the finished work.

ELIGIBILITY
This request for proposals is open to all artists, age 18 and over regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, citizenship, disability, or any other status protected by federal and state law. Artist teams may also apply; however, the fee will be paid on a project basis not per person. Artists may also submit multiple entries. If multiple entries are to be submitted, the artist must submit the entire application for each submission.

Artists will be paid a stipend of $500 per box to complete the work. The purchase of the materials and tools used to complete each control box are the responsibility of the artist. There will be no reimbursement for expenses incurred to submit interest in this project.

SELECTION PROCESS
The final selection will be made from the BTW staff and resident leaders living in the target area. After all submissions are received, the committee will meet between September 13 and September 17 to review all submissions and select finalists. We reserve the right to request additional details including more detailed drawings, descriptions or samples of the proposed artwork. Selection criteria may include (but not be limited to): the applicant’s professional qualifications, ability to undertake the project, ability and experience working with community residents and organizations, implementation of standards detailed in this request for proposals and artist merit as evidenced by submitted materials.

The project will also serve as an opportunity for artists with no previous experience with public art projects to demonstrate their ability to work with community groups and government agencies in the creation of an art project with the benefit of their work being publicly displayed for the foreseeable future.
